Art for Healing and Growth

Jennifer Riga Manuel, an artist, avid life learner, and wonderful story teller shares how creativity, art and humor eventually helped her triumph over her “Dark Years” of depression.  Jennifer is on a journey of constant reinvention and is an inspiration to anyone seeking to learn and open up their creative side!

 Humor in the Dark

Have you, or anyone you know, struggled with depression? It can be a very hard abyss to climb out of, yet many have found that some of the best coping methods are surprisingly simple.  Jennifer discovered that through humor and creating an extroverted, funny character she was able to embody a lighter self, even when feeling down, shy, and depressed.

We’ve all heard the common “fake it till you make it” phrase, and while it might seem dishonest or inauthentic to pretend, focusing on how bad we feel rarely if ever makes anyone feel better. If it feels like you’re drowning in depression, or fuming in anger and agitation, and looking for a way out, you might really benefit from hearing what worked for Jennifer.

“Laughing, in our family, was one of the biggest coping skills there was.”

But this interview is about so much more than depression. It’s also about creating, creativity, following your heart, creating art and beauty, and finding someone in your life who believes in you and uplifts you, (and for whom you do the same).

It’s a lot about the journey of perpetual self-reinvention, and in fact perhaps that is really just the thing that saved Jennifer’s life, (besides her husband Van).

We’ve all experienced hurt and pain to varying degrees in our lives. For some, pain can hit in a series of unfortunate events all in a short span of time.  Others might experience a roller coaster ride of highs, lows, and everything in between.

Pain, like every emotion, is part of our human experience and not always something we can control.  WhatJennifer Riga Manuel, Van Manuel, LeAura Alderson, Boomers Reinvented, Best Boomers and Beyond, Best Boomers, Baby Boomer Generation, Baby Boomers, Art, Artists, Overcoming Depression Through Art and Creativity, Art for Healing, Self Healing Through Art, Painting, Pottery, Knitting, we are responsible for is how to deal with the events, emotions, or cards we are dealt.

We can’t change what happens to us but we can change our response to what happens.

We meet each challenge and struggle head on, by considering that what’s happening to us is happening for us. When we’re focused on how we can grow through something, and on the solutions and on any positive we can find, we grow.

Learning and growth energizes, elevates and empowers.

This process actually creates better chances and opportunities for ourselves. It would seem the harder way, because it requires effort to shift our obsession with what’s happened over what CAN now happen. But just like how our body and muscles improve with exercise… by pushing through what’s hard, so to do our emotions grow in health and strength.

“We all have things to overcome.”

Jennifer’s way of getting out of her pain and depression was through being creative.  She enjoys art of all kinds and she’s always creating something, but if she gets stuck, she gets to cleaning her studio, and that almost always unlocks her creative streak. Next thing you know she’s gone from cleaning to creating something new.

Van encouraged her to follow her heart and pursue her creative inclinations, and that’s exactly what she’s been doing.

From pottery to knitting to painting and more, Jennifer has become a prolific artist, selling her creations around the world, through Southwinds Gallery in Kernersville, North Carolina.

Viva Fifty and Beyond

Lorraine Ladish, VivaFifty!, LeAura Alderson Baby Boomers, Latina Women Over 50, Phillipe Diederich, Sofrito, Lorraine C. Ladish is a beautiful baby boomer on fire with the entrepreneurial spirit, an artist’s heart, and a writer’s mind. An articulate, and poised free spirit, Lorraine is a woman on a mission to do great work in the world connecting, elevating and empowering others, especially bilingual Latina women.

Empowering Women

Lorraine’s life has been charmed and challenged.  She’s come full circle from comfortable international family of writers, to poverty and despair and back again.  Today, Lorraine’s is an inspiring and colorful success story.

Even if you’re not bilingual and don’t speak Spanish, you will find much of interest on Lorraine’s beautiful site, VivaFifty! If you’re a baby boomer woman, you will find lots to engage, inspire and delight you.

There are so many good articles on her sites. Two of my favorites articles on VivaFifty! is Lorraine’s articles on 10 Signs That You’re Rocking Middle Age, and Famous Authors Who Were Published After 50.

Lorraine started VivaFifty! just about a year ago, at age 50!  She had worked in a well established web publishing company, but as she approached her 50’s, she realized that if she really wanted to do work that mattered to her, she needed to create her own site.

“I realized that if I don’t do my own thing, I’m never going to be in charge.” Lorraine C. Ladish

Lorraine’s message—and life—is a lot about empowering others by sharing what she’s learning in her own journey and by bringing some of the best resources to her audience through her articles and resources as well as that of the contributing writers of VivaFifty!.

You may also be interested in learning some of the surprising cultural differences in the Latina and American communities. We touch on that and the struggles of youth and self image, and now coming more fully into the strong, confident woman Lorraine is today, inspiring others to have the courage to become more fully what they can be.

It’s interesting how it can take us a long time to become more fully ourselves, but when we do, there’s no putting that genie back in the bottle!

Life Remade and Remarried

A love story… a soul mate… a blended family… and today Lorraine is happily remarried to Phillipe Diederich, also an author, whose debut novel is coming out in June 2015, titled Sofrito.

Lorraine and Phil met through a chanciest of encounters—one of those things that each could have missed if not open in the moment—not long after she went through a specific emotional and mental exercise about herself, aging and relationships.

“When you’re in your mid-forties and you have kids, you love a man who treats you like a lady, who respects your children, who comes home when he says he will, and who worries about putting food on the table. So yes, in midlife, my biggest turn on is a faithful, loyal, hard-working guy.

I will never forget when we first met…”

“He had also done his share of soul searching and maybe that’s why our souls met. All I know is that we met at the right time.”   [Reprinted from Lorraine’s article on VivaFifty!]

Today Lorraine is fully reinventing her life, liberating her entrepreneurial and writer spirit to soar.

She is just revving up her second half of life, filled with creative ideas awaiting birth, including two new books on the way, one in English!

Their story is quite interesting—involving revolutions, Europe, lost luggage in the Arctic Circle, and workout tops gone awry.

I caught up with Kymberly and Alexandra soon after they spoke at a recent Bloggers at Midlife conference in Nashville, put on by the cool folks at Midlife Boulevard. They were there to help energize, motivate and inspire the audience while mingling and exchanging experiences with fellow boomer bloggers.

They began teaching aerobics in the early 80’s even before it was a “thing”.

It seems they just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But they also seized the opportunities that came their way, walking through each open door of opportunity which led to globetrotting and living around the world during most of their 20’s.

“We’ve met some of the most amazing people around the world through fitness,” says Kymberly.

It just seems that wherever we would travel there just happened to be a coup!

We will never know what roles they may or may not have played in catalyzing revolutions, but chances are good a few involved a few broken hearts when they finally returned home to settle down and raise kids.

The twins are sold on fitness for life and eager to help others keep healthy and fired up with healthy lifestyles.  One of their mottos is so true and so important:

In our conversation we also evaluated two angles to a similar quote:

Alexandra said, “Once you do a lot of movement it’s actually more uncomfortable to be still.”

But I thought she said, “Once you do a lot of movement it’s actually more comfortable to be still.”

Turns out both sides of this coin are true.

Friendship, Vulnerability, and Daring to Be You

Brene Brown, Vulnerability, Courage, Friendship, Oprah, Super Soul Sunday, LeAura Alderson, Best Boomers and Beyond, Baby Boomers, Boomers Reinvented, Fair weathered friends,
Brené Brown, author of Daring Greatly, and The Gifts of Imperfection
.
Love and friendship is the source of our greatest joy.  And our greatest pain.

Brené Brown’s messages touches my heart and speaks to my sense of life, of friendship and of daring greatly to live and be more than I’ve been before. To be more than I—and others—have assumed I could be.

I first discovered Brené on her first TED talk on The Power of Vulnerability.  It has received over 19 million views, so it clearly touched a resonant chord within many of us.

Clearly, she wasn’t doing a rehearsed talk on vulnerability but rather she was epitomizing her concept, even as she spoke it. Since then I’ve read her book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead.

Brene Brown, Vulnerability, Courage, Friendship, Oprah, Super Soul Sunday, LeAura Alderson, Best Boomers and Beyond, Baby Boomers, Boomers Reinvented, Fair weathered friends,Excerpt from a TED Blog article by Kate Torgovnick May: “When we spend our lives waiting until we’re perfect or bulletproof before we walk into the arena, we ultimately sacrifice relationships and opportunities that may not be recoverable, we squander our precious time, and we turn our backs on our gifts, those unique contributions that only we can make,” says Brown. “Perfect and bulletproof are seductive, but they don’t exist in the human experience.”

Brené Brown, TED 2012
Brené Brown, TED 2012, Listening to Shame

Whether you’re struggling with anything now, or not, you will benefit immensely from Brené’s TED talk in 2012, titled Listening to Shame. She begins by sharing a conversation with a good friend of hers.

Which, by the way, was inspiring not only because of Brené’s vulnerability in sharing, but also because of her friend. We all need a friend like that. The kind of friend who will never hesitate to speak the truth from her perspective, no matter if it’s pleasing to the ear or not. And yet who loves us anyway… warts, bumps, bloopers and all.

We all need the kind of friend—and to be that kind of friend—who celebrates our victories, cries over our pains with us, and yet always… always speaks her mind, tempered through her heart.  Guys too.  Guys need that kind of friend, and need to be that kind of friend.

Deep and meaningful friendships that have withstood the test of time have this going for them.

Friends can help us see and navigate obstacles. We’re on the journey together, each sometimes leading, following, nudging and helping.

Brene Brown, Vulnerability, Courage, Friendship, Oprah, Super Soul Sunday, LeAura Alderson, Best Boomers and Beyond, Baby Boomers, Boomers Reinvented, Fair weathered friends,The deep relationships that weather the storms of time, are those built on mutual learning, growth, respect and love…. on an assumption of trust and love.  And, someone with whom you can be vulnerable. It is only in our vulnerability that we are truly real.

If we are not truly real together, then who are we?

Brene Brown, Vulnerability, Courage, Friendship, Oprah, Super Soul Sunday, LeAura Alderson, Best Boomers and Beyond, Baby Boomers, Boomers Reinvented, Fair weathered friends,BUT… Brené also cautions us about vulnerability in her second book, The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are. She says:

“We need to look before we take the vulnerability leap, and choose carefully who we open up to.”

Many people dive in with both feet and a bare heart and share their soul too soon.

In talking with Oprah on Super Soul Sunday, about her Gifts of Imperfection book, Brené Brown elaborates on this, speaking of six types of people as “friends”, some of whom may not be the place you go to be vulnerable.

It is only in true vulnerability that we are ultimately real. Brené Brown
Brene Brown, Vulnerability, Courage, Friendship, Oprah, Super Soul Sunday, LeAura Alderson, Best Boomers and Beyond, Baby Boomers, Boomers Reinvented, Fair weathered friends,
Fair-weathered friends… will they still be there when…? Through thick and thin?

Yet trust not only the fair-weathered friend. If we can trust enough to be vulnerable and safe, known and yet loved, understood, while understanding, and appreciated for who we are, that is a solid foundation.

For growth and progress best friends are cheerleaders and coaches, for from time to time, we all need a hand, a cheer, a mirror, and a boost.

We do not want the friend who will tell us what we want to hear, no matter what they really think, do we?  As soon as that happens, a layer of dishonesty enters the relationship and erosion begins.

Oprah asks what Brené is really looking for [in a friend], and Brené says:

“I’m looking for the person who loves me not despite my vulnerability and imperfection, but because of it. I’m looking for what I call my ‘move the body’ friends. I’m looking for the folks who are going to show up and wade through the deep with me… and I think it’s a myth that you should have more than one or two of those.”

Me too, Brené. Thanks for your courage in daring greatly to be vulnerable, and in so doing, to help pave the way for the rest of us.

How about you?
